Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a concept which encompasses the challenges currently facing society as organisations seek to integrate successful business practice with a concern for social, environmental and ethical issues. It explores the complex relationships between business decisions and their impact on local and global communities and economies, as well as on the environment and the workplace itself.

It is more than 'simple' responsible business behaviour - the adherence to legal and regulatory frameworks. CSR goes beyond 'compliance'; it describes an overall approach to doing business.

In order to determine levels of social responsibility organisations may choose to undertake a social or environmental audit - the ways in which their activites impact on stakeholders and on the environment.

Amongst the key issues often addressed within corporate social responsibility are financial probity, supply chain ethics, employee practices, competitive behaviours, sustainable development, innovative practices, customer service, impact on society and environmental management.
